As part of the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, each January the Birmingham Public Library Archives Department sponsors Begin the Day: The Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture. Now in its twentieth year, the King Lecture has featured civil rights activists, scholars, children’s book authors, and community leaders discussing civil rights history and contemporary human rights issues including immigrant rights, voting rights, human trafficking, and Islamophobia.
For the 2023 King Lecture, BPL is partnering with the Charles A. Brown-Birmingham Branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History to present “Civil Rights Now: Birmingham Movements of Community Resistance.”
The lecture will take place at Five Points West Regional Library at 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, January 14.
This panel discussion will feature Majella Chube Hamilton, Executive Director of The Ballard House Project as moderator.
Our presentations and presenters will be:
* "Redefining Resistance: Teaching Local History in Birmingham," by Dr. Sylvea Hollis, Montgomery College
* "Love As An Act of Resistance: Educators Representing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Legacy of Resistance" Dr. Penny Seals, Samford University
* "Beyond the Grave We Speak: Our Voice Will Never Be Silent" Ms. Ethel Alexander, Birmingham City Schools (retired). Ethel Alexander hosted an exhibit at the Central Library last year on Colony, Alabama, a Cullman County town founded by ex-slaves.
* "Sophisticated Attacks & Consequential Activism: Legal & Political Gains of the Civil Rights Movement” Dr. Martez Files, University of Pittsburgh
* "Community Healing and Resistance: Telling Our Own Story" Ms. Debra Love, Founder and Consultant, E3 Solutions The 20th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture is free and open to the public.
